Arsenal youth striker Chido Martin Obi has received some good news this week, learning that he’s been included in the Denmark squad for the 2024 u17 European Championships.

Denmark are in Group B of the tournament, along with Austria, Croatia, and Wales.

They’ll face Wales on Monday, May 20th, Croatia on Thursday, May 23rd, and Austria on Sunday, May 26th. All three games are at 16:00 BST.

Martin Obi’s club season isn’t quite over, and one consequence of the u17 Euros call-up is that he won’t be available for the Premier League 2 play-off semi-final and final, should the Arsenal u21s make it that far.

The striker has primarily featured for the Arsenal u18s this season, but with his incredible goalscoring form, there had been some speculation that he might step up to the u21 side.

That would now only be possible for the quarter-final against Chelsea on Saturday.

Since mid-March, Martin Obi has played seven u18 Premier League matches, scoring 24 goals.

While he focuses on facing Chelsea on Saturday (both the u18s and the u21s are playing the same opponent), Martin Obi’s contract negotiations continue.

The Athletic report that talks with Arsenal are ongoing, with the player not yet having signed his scholarship contract with the club.

As it stands, that means Martin Obi would be out of contract in the summer, but that’s not an unexpected situation for a player of his age.

Premier League rules prevent a player from officially signing scholarship terms until July 1st of the school year in which they turn 16. For Martin Obi, that’s July 1st, 2024.

Martin Obi will then be eligible to sign a professional deal once he turns 17 on November 29th, 2024.
