Arsenal have received their first call-up for this summer’s European Championships, with Germany announcing their squad list on Thursday.
Following Hungary’s squad announcement earlier this week, Germany became the second of the 24 teams involved in Euro 2024 to confirm their squad list on Thursday.
Among the call-ups was Arsenal’s Kai Havertz, with the decision no surprise in light of the German’s recent displays.
Havertz has 14 goals and assists in his last 13 Premier League games, the kind of form that will excite fans of this summer’s hosts.
Euro 2024 will take place between June 14th and July 14th, though exactly how long Havertz spends at the tournament will depend on how far Germany progress. Their group stage involvement ends on June 23rd.
There was bad news for another former Gunner, however, with Bernd Leno missing out on Germany’s squad list through injury.
Leno had been called up for four of Germany’s six previous squads, including the most recent international break in March, with his form at Fulham proving enough to earn him a place on the bench.
But Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed reports that the goalkeeper has a shoulder injury, and he’ll miss the tournament.
“Alexander Nübel deserved the call-up because Bernd Leno, who would have been called up, is injured,” Nagelsmann admitted.
At this point, the squad is technically only preliminary, with 27 players called up and only 26 allowed in the final squad. You’d expect one of Germany’s four goalkeepers to be the player to drop out by the June 6th deadline.
Germany will face Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland in the group stage.
Let’s take a look at all of the Arsenal players in line for a call-up this summer.
Arsenal Euro 2024 potential call-ups
Group A
- Germany
- Scotland
- Hungary
- Switzerland
Kai Havertz has been called up by Germany, whilst on-loan Kieran Tierney will have ended his spell with Real Sociedad and will almost certainly start for Scotland.
Group B
- Spain
- Croatia
- Italy
- Albania
David Raya should receive a Spain call-up, though he’s unlikely to play ahead of Unai Simon. Jorginho should be involved and starting for Italy.
Group C
- Slovenia
- Denmark
- Serbia
- England
Aaron Ramsdale, Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice should all be with England at the tournament, with Saka and Rice likely starters.
Eddie Nketiah, Ben White, Emile Smith Rowe, and Reiss Nelson are all eligible, but it would be a surprise to see any of them involved, even with the expanded squads.
Arsenal loan striker Mika Biereth is technically eligible for Denmark and in excellent form, but he’s yet to make his senior international debut and this is an unlikely time for him to get it.
Group D
- Netherlands
- France
- Poland
- Austria
William Saliba should be involved with France, and Jakub Kiwior with Poland.
Jurrien Timber might be involved with the Netherlands if he’s fit, but with no senior games under his belt at this point, it’s not looking hugely likely.
Group E
- Ukraine
- Slovakia
- Belgium
- Romania
Oleksandr Zinchenko will probably be a starter for Ukraine, and Leandro Trossard is likely to start for Belgium. Both will certainly be on the plane.
Albert Sambi Lokonga is also eligible for Belgium, but his recent injuries and the fact he hasn’t been involved with the national team for a while make it unlikely he’ll get a call-up.
Group F
- Portugal
- Czech Republic
- Georgia
- Turkey
Arsenal technically have three players eligible for Portugal: Cedric Soares, Nuno Tavares, and Fabio Vieira.
It seems unlikely any of them will be involved, with Cedric barely playing and both Tavares and Vieira dealing with recent injuries.
