Arsenal fans found themselves in the unusual position of supporting their arch-rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, as they faced Manchester City on Tuesday night. A win or draw for Spurs was essential for Arsenal’s title aspirations. Yet, Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat and their fans’ reaction have sparked widespread disdain, although not from the media. They seem to think Ange Postecoglou has lit a fire under Spurs, despite his clear anger in his press conference at the behaviour of Spurs’ fans.

Tottenham’s fans celebrated their club’s downfall with an enthusiasm that can only be described as pathetic. As Manchester City scored, Spurs supporters sang louder, turning what should have been a moment of frustration into a carnival of self-deception. “Are you watching Arsenal?” they belted out as they humiliated themselves once again.

This spectacle reached its peak as City’s second goal hit the net. Rather than rallying behind their team in a desperate bid to salvage a result, the Tottenham faithful chose to revel in the moment, delighting in their own team’s shortcomings. The scenes from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium were remarkable. Fans abandoned any semblance of pride, embracing a defeat that saw them miss out on Champions League qualification in favour of Aston Villa, managed by a man sacked by Arsenal for being a bit rubbish.

Arsenal supporters, who had begrudgingly pinned their hopes on a Tottenham victory, got what they expected from Spurs. The irony of relying on their fiercest rivals compounded by the confirmation that Tottenham fans were more content with celebrating mediocrity than striving for any sort of self-respect.

Tottenham‘s fans have once again embarrassed football and, today, they are running around the internet, crowing about Arsenal ‘bottling’ the league as they sit some 23 points behind.

A DVD of their immense achievement will be released soon.
