Granit Xhaka is hoping Arsenal can follow his example and win the league this season, despite Sunday’s defeat to Aston Villa.

On a personal level, Granit Xhaka had a fantastic weekend, winning the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and scoring in the title-clinching game against Werder Bremen.

The one disappointment for Xhaka was learning afterwards that his former club Arsenal had lost to Aston Villa, with both games taking place at the same time.

Speaking after the game, Xhaka insisted Arsenal can still win the Premier League, and he hopes they will.

“For sure (Arsenal can win the league),” Xhaka said. “Boni (Victor Boniface) told me that they lost today, 0-2 against Aston Villa, but still everything is very close.”

“They know I am still in contact with many teammates, with the club, I wish them nothing but luck,” Xhaka added.

“Hopefully, they can do it this year because last year was very close, hopefully they can do it.”

Leverkusen still have plenty to play for themselves, despite having already won the Bundesliga.

The German club are also in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, with a 2-0 lead over West Ham United after the first leg. They’re also in the final of the DFB-Pokal, set to play FC Kaiserslautern on May 25th.

Even in the Bundesliga, with the title already won, Leverkusen have a lot still to play for.

With no defeats so far this season, the team have already set a new record for the longest unbeaten run from the start of a Bundesliga season.

They now have the chance to complete the entire campaign without losing.
