Newcastle United are reportedly reigniting their interest in England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old Arsenal shot-stopper has found himself playing second fiddle to David Raya since the Spaniard’s arrival in January.

This isn’t the first time Newcastle have been linked with Ramsdale. The story holds weight due to the existing connection between the player and Magpies boss Eddie Howe. Howe played a crucial role in Ramsdale’s early career, signing him for Bournemouth in 2017 before loan spells at Chesterfield and Wimbledon.

While the Newcastle boss remained tight-lipped on specific targets when questioned about Ramsdale in December, he did acknowledge that “all options are available.” This silence could be seen as a contrast to his outright denials for players like Kalvin Phillips and Scott McTominay.

The Magpies’ need for a new goalkeeper is becoming increasingly evident. Loris Karius is expected to leave when his contract expires, and Martin Dubravka, at 35, is nearing the end of his career with his current deal expiring next year. Ideally, Howe envisions a scenario with two top-flight goalkeepers who can push each other and potentially rotate in European competitions.

Ramsdale’s current situation at Arsenal, coupled with his pre-existing connection to Howe, could make a move to St James’ Park appealing. While a £30 million price tag might raise eyebrows, his talent and potential are undeniable.

Adding further weight to the rumours is the presence of Andy Howe, Newcastle’s assistant head of scouting. He was instrumental in identifying Ramsdale’s talent during his time at Bournemouth. Ramsdale himself has spoken publicly about his gratitude towards Eddie Howe, despite leaving Bournemouth after their relegation.

Despite his struggles at Arsenal, a summer move for Ramsdale remains a possibility. Newcastle view him as a long-term solution, with Nick Pope remaining the number-one choice in the Premier League for the immediate future. Pope is expected to return from a shoulder injury soon, although Dubravka’s shaky performance against West Ham highlights the need for reinforcements.

While Karius is a capable deputy, Newcastle are actively looking for a more permanent solution. Ramsdale, with his Premier League experience and connection to the club, could be the answer they’re looking for.

Ramsdale, however, swapping a number two role at Arsenal for a number two role at Newcastle, however, seems unlikely.
