Arsenal came back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 against Aston Villa on Saturday, with Chido Obi-Martin killing the game by scoring the Gunners’ fourth in second-half injury time.

It was a well-taken goal, with Obi-Martin racing in behind the defence before chipping a shot over the outstretched leg of the onrushing goalkeeper.

More notably, Jeorge Bird reports that the striker has now scored more goals than any other Arsenal schoolboy at u18 level in a single season. Rhys Murphy previously held the record from the 2006/07 season.

A “schoolboy” is a youth player who hasn’t yet progressed to scholarship terms with the club.

That’s set to happen this summer, and Obi-Martin should then sign a professional contract when he turns 17 in November. But there are conflicting reports on whether Obi-Martin has already committed to a scholarship contract with Arsenal.

Bird reported in September that the striker has already agreed a scholarship with Arsenal ahead of next season, but All Nigeria Soccer write that nothing has been signed yet.

According to ANS, Obi-Martin has been offered a scholarship and professional contract by Arsenal, but he’s yet to put pen to paper.

For the time being, Obi-Martin is focusing on his football, needing a few more goals to become Arsenal’s overall record goalscorer in a single u18 league season.

The record currently stands at 25, set by Folarin Balogun in 2018/19, who was a year older than Obi-Martin is now.

Obi-Martin is on 21, with three games to go. Arsenal face Norwich City (A), Spurs (A), and Chelsea (H), but he’s scored 17 goals in his last six games, so it’s not an insurmountable task.
