Despite a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium, Luton Town manager Rob Edwards heaped praise on a standout performer for Arsenal.

The Gunners maintained their place in the Premier League title race with a convincing win, but it was Emile Smith Rowe’s performance that particularly impressed Edwards.

Smith Rowe, who was named Player of the Match, used the rare start to show off his creative spark and intelligent movement throughout the match. His performance served as a timely reminder of his quality and fit for Mikel Arteta’s system.

Speaking after the final whistle, Edwards acknowledged Smith Rowe’s influence on the game: “We knew about the threat Smith Rowe poses, but he was exceptional tonight. His movement off the ball was particularly impressive, creating space for his teammates and causing us constant problems.

“I thought he was really good. He’s a top player. They’ve got a lot of top players here and he’s just been unfortunate not to get in but I think he’s an exceptional player.”

Of course, Smith Rowe’s lack of minutes has largely been down to recurring injury problems, which he has hopefully overcome.

The 23-year-old was out for a few months earlier in the season with a knee problem while ankle bruising caused him another issue in February. When he returned to fitness, Arsenal had just beaten West Ham 6-0 and went on to beat Burnley 5-0 in his first match back. It’s hard to change a team that is winning like that.
