Arsenal would have to consider interest in Gabriel Jesus this summer if they sign a striker, according to David Ornstein.

Gabriel Jesus only joined Arsenal in 2022, but his long-term future at the club appears to be in doubt, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Speaking to The Athletic FC Podcast last week, Ornstein assessed Jesus’ current situation at Arsenal.

“Gabriel Jesus, has time moved past him at Arsenal?” Ornstein asked.

“He’s been suffering from this recurring knee injury, or multiple injuries, his goal output is not what he would expect or Arsenal would expect and [what] we know he’s capable of.

“If Arsenal are going to be bringing in a top-level striker, you do imagine that they would have to at least consider any outside interest in Gabriel Jesus.

“Even if it doesn’t materialise (into a transfer), even if he gets fit and shows his versatility, because he can also play wide.”

Jesus has made 32 appearances for Arsenal this season, scoring eight goals and assisting a further seven, which isn’t a terrible record.

But seven of those goal contributions came in Jesus’ eight Champions League games. If you look at the Premier League alone, four goals and four assists in 23 matches just isn’t good enough.

That’s why Kai Havertz has taken Jesus’ place in the starting lineup so often recently, and that’s why there’s now talk of Arsenal signing a potential summer replacement.

As Ornstein mentions, Jesus’ upside is that he can also play out wide. Arsenal may well look to utilise the Brazilian in wide areas if they sign a striker, considering they’re somewhat lacking in wide alternatives to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

Leandro Trossard is the only other player getting regular minutes on the wings, so moving Jesus wide would reduce the urgency for Arsenal to make a signing in that position as well.
