Former Gunner Marcelo Flores picked up a deserved Player of the Match award after three goals and an assist for Tigres on Saturday.

Former academy youngster Marcelo Flores joined Tigres in a permanent transfer from Arsenal in September, ending a four-year spell with the Gunners.

The 20-year-old is slowly breaking into the team with his new side, making 26 appearances so far. That includes nine starts, with five of those starts in Tigres’ last seven league games.

Flores took advantage of one of those recent starts to score a brace against Mazatlan FC in mid-March, but he went one better against Necaxa on Saturday night.

The game didn’t start well, with Necaxa taking a 1-0 lead into the half-time break, but Andre-Pierre Gignac scored an excellent volley to level the scores in the 51st minute.

After that, Flores started to make his mark on the game.

In the 54th minute, Flores provided a relatively simple assist for Jonathan Herrera, cutting back from the edge of the box for his teammate to power in a shot from distance.

Five minutes later, Flores made it 3-1 by powering in a shot from the centre of the box, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

Then it was 4-1, with Flores again finding himself free in the box to turn in a low cross from Jesus Garza.

Completing a 10-minute hat-trick, Flores scored again in the 69th minute, this time firing in from the edge of the box with a shot off the far post.

Though Necaxa scored a consolation a few minutes later, the game was won, and it finished 5-2.

Flores won the Player of the Match award, helping Tigres up to fifth in the Liga MX – the Mexican first division.

The former Arsenal man has seven goals and one assist in 970 minutes for his new club.
