Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has pinpointed two crucial elements for his side’s continued success in the Premier League title race: a resolute defence and a relentless winning mentality.

The Gunners currently sit two points from the top of the table, boasting an impressive 10-game unbeaten run and the league’s best defensive record with only 24 goals conceded in 30 matches. Arteta acknowledges the importance of these factors, emphasising them during his pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend clash with Brighton & Hove Albion.

“For sure,” said Arteta when asked about his delight with Arsenal’s defensive record in 2024. “I talked about, first of all the organisation in the team in a defensive phase and then the desire that the players have to keep clean sheets, defend well and make it difficult for our opponents.”

This focus on defensive solidity provides a platform for Arsenal’s attacking talent to thrive. Arteta stressed the importance of both aspects working in tandem: “That gives us a big platform and, on the weekend, that’s going to be a really important thing because they’re a top side.”

However, it’s not just about keeping clean sheets. Arteta emphasises the need for a winning mentality to secure all three points consistently. “We have to transform [our defensive record] into winning and winning and winning,” he said. “It’s the only way to have the chance in the last game of the season to do it [win the league].”

At the press conference, Arteta revealed that even his family life is influenced by the title chase: “I don’t know [if I’ll watch other title rivals’ games], I have to feel it – every game will be different. I think my wife and kids will have a big say on that as well.”
