David Raya has called Tuesday night’s win over Porto one of the biggest moments in his career, after his penalty-shootout heroics.
Arsenal’s David Raya made two big penalty shootout saves and almost got to a third as the Gunners knocked FC Porto out of the Champions League to progress to the quarter-finals.
Raya insisted afterwards that he “should have saved three”, but two was ultimately enough to send his team through.
“I think it’s one of the biggest moments in my career, my whole career,” Raya admitted to Arsenal.com. “I put it up there and hopefully there’s many more to come here.”
Raya posted on Twitter that it was a “magical night at the Emirates”, sharing photos of one of his saves and his Player of the Match award.
Raya is certainly making himself popular with the Arsenal fans at the moment, and he gave some credit to the supporters for the shootout win.
“The fans have been fantastic; they’ve been fantastic for a long time,” Raya said.
“Especially today, we needed them. They made some noise and got us through spells in which we needed them. They were there for us, and we were there for them.
“We had the fans behind our goal as well and that put a lot of pressure on them and that worked for us. I think that helped us to win the penalty shootout.”
The good news for those fans is that Raya is set to stick around at Arsenal. Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal have already decided to trigger the player’s £27m buy option, making that decision months ago.
The Spaniard is set to be an Arsenal player for the long term, and the team are lucky to have him.
