The March international break has seen the elite round of qualifiers for the u17 European Championships taking place, with 15 spots up for grabs alongside host nation Cyprus.

Both England and Denmark had made it to this final round of qualifiers, so they each faced a four-team group stage to make the final tournament.

England called up Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri, whilst Denmark called up Chido Obi-Martin.

The winners of each group would qualify for the May event, along with seven of the eight group runners-up. So winning your group was the only way to guarantee progression, but finishing second made it pretty likely.

Fortunately, neither England nor Denmark have had any trouble qualifying.

England qualified first, having won their opening game 5-1 against Northern Ireland, and their second game 5-0 against Hungary.

That was enough to guarantee qualification after just two games, and Nwaneri played his part by scoring in both matches.

Denmark had a slightly tougher time of it, drawing their opening match 0-0 against Turkey, before narrowly edging past Serbia 1-0.

That left the group open on the final day, but a goal from Obi-Martin opened the scoring as Denmark ultimately won 7-0 against Georgia to top their group.

Obi-Martin had also scored two goals in three games in the opening round of qualifiers, so he’s certainly played his part in helping Denmark to the final tournament.

The event kicks off on May 20th and lasts until June 5th, with a four-team group stage followed by a quarter-final, semi-final, and final.
