Arsenal’s Katie McCabe believes the team can beat anyone on their day, and she’s pushing to help the side to win trophies this season.
Despite suffering elimination from the FA Women’s Cup and the UEFA Women’s Champions League earlier this season, the Arsenal Women remain in the hunt for a couple of trophies between now and May.
The Gunners take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League on Sunday, as they look to close the three-point gap to league leaders Chelsea. They’ll then go on to play Aston Villa in the FA WSL Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
Katie McCabe told Daily Cannon this week that she’s confident in the current squad, even if Arsenal’s opponents are increasingly looking to sit deep and frustrate them.
“I think we’ve got a fantastic squad of players, and I think we’ve got a range of attributes within the squad that can beat any team on any given day,” McCabe insisted.
“That’s the confidence I have in my team and my club.”
“Of course, you’re not going to get it right all the time,” the full-back continued.
“But if you’re going off the course of this season we have been playing against a lot more low blocks and we’re always looking to improve each week and get points and win competitions for this club.
“When you play for Arsenal, that’s the weight of the shirt. You want to be in all the competitions and competing for trophies and we know that as players. We’ll always do the maximum to get that done.”
McCabe hopes to be a leader for club and country, inspiring her teammates with her performances.
“I just lead by example, in terms of how I play, how I train, how I like to play games. That’s being competitive and bringing energy, and being 100% every day.
“I think consistency is massive to that, you can’t do it every now again, it needs to be every day. Since I’ve moved over, which is like eight, nine years ago now, it stands to you.
“For me, I just try to be the best I can be and lead with action rather than words and hope I can bring teammates along with me.”
That leadership was certainly on show when McCabe captained Ireland at their first World Cup last summer, scoring their first goal from a corner.
“To take myself back to that moment, there won’t be a prouder moment for me personally than leading the girls out in front of a sold-out crowd in Australia,” McCabe recalled.
“It was a really special moment for myself and my teammates and everyone involved and seeing the Irish fans there supporting us and cheering us on. All the support we had back home as well.
“It actually felt like a home game almost, even though we were on the other side of the world! Really special moment and one that I’ll never forget.”
