Arsenal winger Marquinhos has had a slow start to life with Brazilian club Fluminense, still awaiting his first start and only coming off the bench for 10 minutes in their first four games after his transfer.

That didn’t look likely to change on Sunday, as Marquinhos was again named among the substitutes as Fluminense took on Botafogo at home.

The away side raced into a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes, but Fluminense pulled one back before the break to set up an interesting second half.

Marquinhos was then introduced in the 74th minute, and he made a significant contribution 12 minutes later.

With time running down, it was Marquinhos who picked up the ball on the right-hand side, cutting back before whipping a cross into the penalty area.

As a couple of Fluminense players rose to meet the ball, one of them was brought down unfairly for a penalty, which John Kennedy converted.

You can watch Marquinhos’ contribution to the penalty incident here or below from the timestamp 1:49.

If it briefly looked like a fairytale introduction for Marquinhos, that good feeling didn’t last.

A couple of minutes later, Botafogo were awarded a penalty of their own, Andre was sent off, and the away side scored two goals in injury time to win 4-2.

Marquinhos will hope he did enough to catch the eye for potential future appearances despite the end result.

Fluminense have an option to buy Marquinhos at the end of the season, and Arsenal have negotiated a 50% sell-on clause should they do so. It’s in everyone’s interests for the Brazilian to perform well over the coming months.
