It’s been six-and-a-half years since a young Donyell Malen left Arsenal to join PSV Eindhoven, and a lot has happened since then.

The youngster made a name for himself at PSV, scoring 55 goals in 116 games and becoming a full international for the Netherlands before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

Though it took a little while for the forward to get going at Dortmund, he seems to be in the swing of it now.

Malen’s 12 goals this season is his best tally in Germany, having scored nine and 10 in the last two campaigns.

As for what’s next, Malen has suggested that he hopes to play back in England someday.

“I think because I played in England as a youth player, then that is a dream to play in the Premier League,” Malen told Voetbalzone. “I think that is a very beautiful dream.”

The interviewer went on to ask which Premier League club was Malen’s favourite as a child.

“I went to Arsenal, so yes, [Arsenal],” Malen responded. “No [that wasn’t due to a lack of interest from elsewhere], I wanted Arsenal. My favourite club is Arsenal.”

Malen was then asked why he left north London, and whether he’d make a return in the future.

“Yes [I would go back],” Malen answered. “I played there in the academy, I really wanted to break through there. So yes.

“Every now and then in a football career there are points at which you just have to make a decision. Yes, I trained with the first team (at Arsenal) and I was 17, 18 at the time…

“But I thought yes, I should just play professional football. I also had a lot of former teammates who I saw playing professional football for example, and then I still played youth football.

“I just knew that that was the right step to do.”

25-year-old Malen has a contract with Dortmund until 2026, so he may be looking to make a decision on his long-term future before long.
