Jorginho’s agent says they’ll hold conversations with Arsenal over a contract extension, but it will depend on whether the Gunners need him next season.
Arsenal midfielder Jorginho is currently a starter for the club, but he’s out of contract at the end of the season.
The Gunners have an option to extend Jorginho’s deal, but they may prefer for the player to sign a fresh new contract instead, on a longer-term basis.
Speaking to the Italian media this week, Jorginho’s agent Joao Santos confirmed they’ll be holding talks soon.
“He is out of contract with the Gunners, we will talk to them because he is doing well,” Santos told Radio Sportiva (via TMW). “If they need him from next season…
“Today, [Arsenal are] a group that lead the Premier League, they are in a position of absolute importance. They are in the Champions League, they will face Bayern and there will be a lot of emotion until the end in this season.”
On a possible return to Italy, Santos wasn’t ruling anything out, saying: “It’s always like this in football: Jorginho has played in Italy all his life, he likes it a lot, why say no?”
Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Arsenal would speak to Jorginho’s agent in the coming weeks about his new deal, and the agent has previously confirmed that Arsenal would have priority with regards to the player’s next steps.
Before that, Mark Mann-Bryans broke the news that the Gunners plan to offer a new one-year deal with an option for a second.
If Jorginho accepted, his new contract would take him to 2025, with a club option to extend to 2026.
Arsenal’s option to extend Jorginho’s contract by a year remains valid, and it will still be there for the Gunners to activate until the end of the season.
If they can’t reach an agreement on a new deal before May, and if Jorginho remains in strong form, you’d think Arsenal would then fall back to their extension option to ensure they don’t lose the midfielder for nothing.
