Mikel Arteta has called on Arsenal fans to make the Emirates Stadium a cauldron of noise for Tuesday’s clash with FC Porto.

After pulling off a win over Brentford to stay in the Premier League title race on Saturday, Arsenal minds would quickly have turned to Tuesday’s clash with FC Porto.

The Gunners are 1-0 down to Tuesday’s opponents after the first leg away from home, but they have the advantage of playing in front of their own supporters in midweek.

Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal need to take advantage of that fact, asking the fans to bring energy and noise to the second leg.

“This stadium is going to have the energy that you have never seen in your life,” Arteta said. “Because we haven’t done it for 14 years.

“Bring your noise, bring your energy, your passion to that stadium, and something beautiful is going to happen.”

Arteta’s mention of “14 years” is in reference to the last time Arsenal made it past the Champions League last-16.

The Gunners were eliminated at this stage on their last seven attempts, before spending a while away from the competition altogether.

From 2006 to 2010, Arsenal made the final, the last-16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and the quarter-finals respectively in each of those five seasons.

Fans of the Gunners will be desperate not just to get back to a run like that, but to go one step further and actually win the competition this time.

That can only start by ending this long run of last-16 exits on Tuesday.
