Arsenal‘s blistering form in 2024 has propelled them to the top of the Premier League table, at least temporarily, with the Gunners now boasting a perfect record of eight wins to start the calendar year.

This remarkable feat places them in elite company, as data from OptaJoe reveals they are only the fourth Premier League team to achieve this milestone.

Arsenal now find themselves alongside Manchester United (2009), Liverpool (2020), and Manchester City (2021). Significantly, each of these teams went on to win the Premier League title in those respective seasons.

Could history be repeating itself for the Gunners? Maybe. Arsenal last won eight in a row while scoring two or more in a run between January and March in 2004 and, as TomEde1 of Opta says as he delivered the stat, “we all know who won the title that year”.

Dominant displays and title ambitions

Arsenal‘s recent victories haven’t simply been narrow wins. Their dominance is underlined by a +29 goal difference during their winning streak, showcasing exactly what a title winning team needs – loads of goals and a tight defence. No team has conceded fewer goals this season than Arsenal and no team has scored more. In a universe where 115 charges actually mattered, there would only be one winner tipped for this title as Liverpool’s ‘kids’ (hopefully) run out of steam.

While past records don’t obviously guarantee future success, Arsenal‘s current form, coupled with the historical precedent set by previous teams who achieved this feat, suggests a title triumph could be on the cards. Could.

It’s the hope that eventually kills you, right? Not the despair. That, we learn to live with.
