Arsenal are expected to sign a midfielder this summer, but it may not be Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad, according to a report.

Charles Watts reports in his Daily Briefing that he expects Arsenal to sign a midfielder this summer, but there are still a lot of uncertain variables in the situation.

For a start, it will depend on which midfielders leave Arsenal, with Jorginho and Thomas Partey’s futures uncertain. But even if one or both of them leave, it’s not entirely clear which player the Gunners would bring in.

Watts writes that Martin Zubimendi is admired by Arsenal, and Mikel Arteta knows him well, but the Gunners still don’t know if he actually wants to leave Real Sociedad. There’s also strong rival interest if he does.

Assessing Arsenal’s other potential targets, Watts reports that the club have been tracking Douglas Luiz for a couple of years, but Aston Villa would demand a very high price and make a deal difficult.

Then there’s Amadou Onana, who Watts reports is one to watch, despite adding that there was nothing concrete in the January links.

None of Arsenal’s potential midfield targets are the clear number-one choice at the moment, in the way you would’ve said Declan Rice was an obvious transfer priority this time last year.

Over the next few months we should get a better idea of which player Arsenal might pursue, particularly when we know more about what’s happening with the current crop of midfielders.
