Aaron Ramsdale has admitted Saturday’s game wasn’t easy for him in a social media post praising his teammates after the Brentford win.
Aaron Ramsdale made his return to the Arsenal starting lineup as the Gunners faced Brentford on Saturday, playing his first Premier League fixture since late November and just his second league game since September 3rd.
David Raya has been Mikel Arteta’s starting goalkeeper throughout the last six months, with Ramsdale only coming back in for the Brentford games for which Raya is ineligible – as a Brentford loanee.
Ramsdale did play one game in January against Liverpool in the FA Cup, but even that is somewhat of a distant memory right now.
So perhaps it was no surprise that the goalkeeper was a bit rusty against Brentford on Saturday.
For the first half, Ramsdale looked a bit nervy, and it only got worse when his error gifted Brentford an equaliser just before half-time.
The goalkeeper rallied and performed well after the break, making a couple of vital saves to keep the scores level and ultimately allow for Kai Havertz to score the winner.
But the 25-year-old has since admitted on Instagram that it wasn’t entirely an easy experience for him.
“This team,” Ramsdale began by exclaiming. “It was tough out there but it was special to be back.
“I owe my teammates and [you] amazing fans the world for the support I get week in, week out.”
Comments that we may already have seen Ramsdale’s last minutes in an Arsenal shirt are obviously a bit premature.
One injury or suspension for Raya would see Ramsdale retaking his spot as the club’s starting goalkeeper, and there are never any guarantees that a player on a long contract will get a summer transfer, even when a move makes sense.
But if that was to be Ramsdale’s final Arsenal appearance, at least it ended in celebration.
