Arsenal loanee Kieran Tierney and former Gunner Matteo Guendouzi both had a difficult Tuesday, as their current clubs were eliminated from the Champions League.

The Champions League last-16 is currently ongoing, and Kieran Tierney’s loan side Real Sociedad went into their second-leg match on Tuesday looking to overturn a 2-0 deficit.

Tierney had missed the first leg through injury, only making his first start back on Saturday, and it was perhaps no surprise to see him on the bench for the second leg.

January signing Javi Galan started the match instead, but the 29-year-old could do nothing about a Kylian Mbappe masterclass that saw his side progressing to the quarter-finals with another win. It was 2-1 on the night, 4-1 on aggregate.

Tierney was Arsenal’s only loanee in the Champions League, so Arsenal winning the competition themselves is now the only way for any of their players to get a winner’s medal.

Elsewhere, former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi may have been the more hopeful of the two going into Tuesday’s fixtures, as Lazio were taking a 1-0 lead away to Bayern Munich.

Guendouzi had won the Player of the Match award for the first leg in Lazio, and he was given another 90 minutes in the second, but Bayern ended up comfortable 3-0 winners to progress to the next round as well.

Arsenal do still have a few other former Gunners remaining in the tournament, including:

  • Former first-team wingers Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alexis Sanchez, whose Inter Milan side are 1-0 up against Atletico Madrid after the first leg at home.
  • Former academy forward Donyell Malen, whose Borussia Dortmund side are level with PSV Eindhoven at 1-1 after the first leg away from home.
  • Another former academy forward in Harry Kane of Bayern Munich!
