The Telegraph has revealed that Arsenal are interested in the Aston Villa goalkeeper, Daphne van Domselaar.
The fee is reportedly around £200,000 for a player that signed a three-year contract with Villa last summer. Tom Garry also reports that Arsenal‘s interest in Mary Earps has also cooled down, making it sensible to target a younger player for the long term.
Arsenal have a history with Dutch goalkeepers with Sari Van Veenendaal having won the League with the club back in 2018/19.
Where does it leave the club with an extra goalkeeper, should she be signed in the summer? We currently have our number 1 Manuela Zinsbeger, our number 2 goalie Sabrina D’Angelo, a short term contract number 3 in Sarah Bouhaddi, a number 4 who has an ACL injury in Kaylan Marckese and a number 5 youngster Naomi Williams who has a professional contract but has never played a first team game.
Obviously, Sarah Bouhaddi will be gone in the summer and I wonder if we will keep Naomi Williams out of first team football after a blank season. Kaylan Marckese might not be ready once the season 2024/25 starts. Sabrina D’Angelo could also go, considering her lack of playing time.
The big question surrounds Manuela Zinsberger, who recently extended her contract. Would van Domselaar come to be her understudy or would she become the number 1 from the start or during the season? Interestingly, her statistics are not phenomenal with Aston Villa, who are having a poor season. But she has been consistent and was very good with the Netherlands National Team at the Euros 2022 and the World Cup 2023.
Could she translate that form playing behind an Arsenal defence that should be less porous than the Villa one? The playing style is different, as well, as we either try to press high and stay high on the pitch or we try to play build up from the back attacking play against deep blocks.
She is definitely a good shot stopper and has great reflexes. She would certainly be a great addition to the squad.
