Nottingham Forest made an enquiry for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale before their eventual deadline-day move for Matz Sels, according to a report.

Nottingham Forest were on the lookout for a goalkeeper in the January transfer window, and they ended up bringing in Strasbourg’s Matz Sels in a deadline-day deal.

Sels will compete with former Gunner Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos for the first-choice spot at Forest, with 37-year-old Wayne Hennessey also on the books with the club.

It’s likely a frustrating situation for ex-Arsenal man Turner, who moved to Forest for regular minutes but now has to compete with three goalkeepers with his new club.

It could have been even worse, with Forest making a brief attempt to bring in Aaron Ramsdale, the man who was ahead of Turner at Arsenal to begin with.

Daniel Taylor of The Athletic reports that Nottingham Forest made an enquiry for Ramsdale, among others, before eventually settling on Sels.

It’s clear Ramsdale was just one name on a long shortlist, with Forest also enquiring about Caoimhin Kelleher of Liverpool, Sam Johnstone of Crystal Palace, and Rui Silva of Real Betis.

The Premier League club also bid for Koen Casteels at Wolfsburg, before their deadline-day move for Sels.

But perhaps they felt there was some possibility of a transfer for Ramsdale, with the goalkeeper struggling for minutes behind David Raya and Euro 2024 coming up in the summer.

Forest evidently didn’t get far with their enquiry, and that’s no real surprise.

Arsenal clearly rate Ramsdale highly, even if it seems that Arteta rates Raya a little more. They’re not going to let a great second-choice goalkeeper leave with the Premier League and Champions League trophies still on the line.

If things continue the way they have been, it seems inevitable Ramsdale will end up leaving over the next few transfer windows. But if and when he does, Arsenal will want to sign a strong replacement first.
