Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe conceded that his team was still haunted by their humbling defeat at the hands of Arsenal when they played in the FA Cup.
The Magpies’ 4-1 battering at the Emirates was a harsh reality check, exposing the gap between the two sides despite Newcastle’s ambitions.
“There was probably a slight hangover from that Arsenal game earlier in the match,” Howe admitted after their midweek FA Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers. “Hopefully now that has totally gone.”
Arsenal‘s clinical display against Newcastle served as a masterclass in tactical superiority and ruthless attacking efficiency. It highlighted areas where Howe’s men need to improve if they want to challenge for the Premier League title.
The Gunners’ relentless pressure, precise passing, and fluid movement overwhelmed Newcastle‘s usually solid defence
While Newcastle hoped to bounce back in the FA Cup with a strong performance, they needed extra time and penalties to overcome Blackburn Rovers, who currently sit 16th in the Championship just four points above the relegation zone.
Arsenal, meanwhile, will gain additional confidence from knowing their current form instils a sense of apprehension in their rivals. It has been a long time since other teams feared Arsenal.
