Gabriel Martinelli scored to give Arsenal the lead against Liverpool on Sunday night, his fifth goal against Jurgen Klopp’s teams.

Opta point out that Liverpool are therefore the team that Martinelli has scored against the most, along with Crystal Palace.

But on top of that, no player has been directly involved in more league goals against Liverpool since the start of last season than Martinelli’s five – made up of three goals and two assists.

On this occasion, Martinelli’s goal came about through his determination and a piece of play Mikel Arteta called “streetwise” after the game.

“I think he looks again really confident, really sharp,” Arteta said.

“He was a real threat today not only for the goal that he scored and how intuitive and cheeky and streetwise he was to do what he did.”

Chasing down a long ball, Martinelli gave Virgil van Dijk a bit of a nudge.

The contact was shoulder to shoulder, and it was never likely to be called as a foul, but it put off both van Dijk and Alisson and ended up leaving the Arsenal man with an open goal.

The goal was pivotal in the game, with Arsenal going on to score a third and secure the three points.

It was yet another moment of Martinelli magic against Liverpool, and it means Arsenal have drawn away and won at home against Klopp’s team for the second consecutive Premier League campaign.

That’s just the kind of record you want against your title rivals.
