Arsenal academy teammates Khayon Edwards and Zane Monlouis both got their first opportunities in first-team football on Tuesday night, with their loan clubs handing them midweek debuts.

After three games on the bench for Leyton Orient, Edwards got his first chance in the starting lineup against Northampton Town on Tuesday.

The striker played 76 minutes and created one big chance in Orient’s 4-3 win, completing 85% of his passes. He also made an effort on the defensive end with one tackle and one interception.

“Khayon’s making his debut, 20 years old,” Orient head coach Richie Wellens said afterwards.

“We’re starting with a front three, and at times we ran them ragged. Really clever sometimes in pockets, sometimes outside, our rotations were fantastic.

“Part of my team talk was…go out there, enjoy it, energy, speed, skill, express yourself. I thought the young players done that.”

Elsewhere, Zane Monlouis made his debut for Reading coming off the bench late in the contest.

Reading were ultimately left disappointed in a 1-1 draw, but manager Ruben Selles suggested Monlouis had earned his chance – albeit with the centre-back operating in an unfamiliar right-back role on this occasion.

“Zane has been working really hard since he came to us, learning the position,” Selles said.

“Today, he needed to step in in the right-back position because Kelvin (Ehibhatiomhan) was the first time for a long time that he played that amount of minutes, and we needed to take care of him.

“I think we need to continue growing together and [the debutants] are the present and the future for us.

“When the game is going in that direction and we need energy, I’m always going to put them on the pitch because they’re doing good work.”
