Despite the pressure, Bruno Guimaraes avoided receiving the yellow card against Bournemouth on Saturday that would have triggered a two-match suspension. Somehow, the midfielder managed to finish the game without committing a single foul that the referee noticed. This is a relief for Newcastle, keeping their combative midfielder available for the crucial away match against Arsenal next week, followed by the home game against Wolves.

Guimaraes, along with teammate Anthony Gordon, faced the risk of being sidelined due to accumulated yellow cards. They both remain just one booking away from reaching the 10-card threshold that would initiate their suspension. With eight more Premier League fixtures before the ban-risk window closes, they both seem to be walking a fine line.

Prior to the Bournemouth match, Eddie Howe acknowledged the tightrope Guimaraes navigates: “I think he has to play in that line…He’s the type of player that has to be emotional and committed to produce his best performances,” Howe said. While he wants the midfielder to play his game, Howe also emphasised the stakes: “I hope he can keep his emotions under control and we can get through this period because he’s such a vital player.”
