Barcelona may be open to selling Frenkie de Jong this summer, reportedly putting Arsenal on alert.
Relevo reported this week that Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona is more open than ever, with the player as close to leaving the club as he’s ever been.
According to the report, de Jong is no longer closing the door on a potential exit, despite his previous refusals to leave the club.
The 26-year-old is disappointed in Barcelona’s current situation, and he believes his expectations haven’t been met.
From the other side, Barcelona also have some doubts about de Jong’s performances.
The club expect to have to make a significant sale this summer, and de Jong looks like one of the favourites, given his strong market value and those doubts from both sides.
HITC report that Arsenal are one of the clubs to ask to be kept informed of any developments in the situation, and add that the player’s desire is to remain in Europe.
Arsenal have been linked with de Jong since long before he even signed for Barcelona, and the player once suggested he might join the Gunners.
“I actually thought Arsenal was pretty beautiful in the past,” de Jong said in 2019.
“In my mind I have had the following list for a long time: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona, call it the Marc Overmars route.”
For now, any potential deal is still in its infancy. But we know Arsenal will be on the lookout for a midfielder this summer, and de Jong is seemingly one to watch.
