Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal plan to complete an agreement on a new deal for Takehiro Tomiyasu in the coming weeks, adding that talks have been in the final stages since December.

Tomiyasu has been away from the club for the AFC Asian Cup over the last few weeks, but Japan were eliminated by an injury-time Iran penalty on Saturday.

The 25-year-old is now free to return to Arsenal and sign a new deal, should both parties come to a complete agreement.

Tomiyasu hasn’t been able to play a significant role for Arsenal over the last couple of months, with his Asian Cup absence preceded by a calf injury.

The defender suffered the injury on December 2nd, missing almost a month of action before his return on December 31st. But as soon as he was fit, he was off to Qatar for the Asian Cup.

One of Arsenal’s most consistent performers this season when fit, it would be great news for the team if Tomiyasu could get a run of games under his belt and sign a new deal.

The defender’s current contract lasts until 2025, having only signed a four-year deal when joining the club in 2021.

Arsenal have some big games coming up this month, including the Champions League last-16 clash with FC Porto, and Premier League matches against West Ham, Burnley, and Newcastle United.

Having Tomiyasu involved would be a boost all across the defensive line.
