Arsenal have until the summer to make a decision on whether to activate their option in Jorginho’s contract, according to a report.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal’s option to extend Jorginho’s contract by a year remains valid, and it will still be there for the Gunners to activate until the end of the season.
As it stands, Jorginho only has a contract with Arsenal until the summer. But if they choose to activate his contract option, his deal will be extended to 2025.
Romano writes that Mikel Arteta is “really happy” with Jorginho’s performances at the moment. Should that continue to be the case, you’d expect the club to activate the midfielder’s extension clause.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Mikel Arteta answered questions about Jorginho’s contract situation.
“I’m really happy with him, that’s all I can say,” Arteta responded. “The contract situation is for Edu and the board to manage.
“But his application, and the capacity he has in the big matches to affect the game is tremendous and he was really good against Liverpool again.
“When we imagined what he could bring to the team and how we could make us better, he’s doing exactly that or even better.”
Jorginho was also asked about his contract after Arsenal’s match against Liverpool, in which he was voted Player of the Match.
“I am trying to enjoy the moment, to be honest,” Jorginho said then.
“We haven’t spoken about it (my contract) and I just want to win games with Arsenal.”
The player’s agent said in November that they won’t rush a decision on an extension, but Arsenal remain his priority.
“Everything is at a standstill,” Joao Santos said. “We’ll think about it after February. However, the priority remains Arsenal.”
