Arsenal’s upcoming fixture against Chelsea has been postponed, with reports it could end up being moved to the midweek of the north London derby.

Arsenal have now confirmed that the Premier League game against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on March 16th has been postponed, due to the away side reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Gunners haven’t yet announced when the game will now be played, writing only that a new date “will be announced in due course”.

Simon Collings of the Evening Standard highlights that if Arsenal reach the Champions League quarter-finals, their first clear midweek would be the week commencing April 22nd.

That would mean the Chelsea game taking place just days before the north London derby, which is currently rumoured to be pencilled in for the Sunday, April 28th, at 16:30 GMT.

But there could still be further twists and turns. The Wolves game the previous weekend (April 20th) might end up being moved as well, should Wolves make the FA Cup semi-finals.

Arsenal may or may not have a game in the midweek after the Spurs clash, depending on whether they’re in the Champions League semi-finals.

If there is a Champions League game on the Tuesday, that may force the Spurs game to the Saturday, and have a knock-on effect on when the Chelsea game can be played.

Conversely, if the Gunners are eliminated from the Champions League by Porto, Mikel Arteta’s side would have a couple of free midweeks earlier in April, and the fixture pile-up will disappear.

The only thing we can be sure of right now is that we aren’t going to get much clarity on the situation until after the Champions League and FA Cup results give us a clearer picture of what’s possible.
