Premier League pundit Alan Shearer has selected two Arsenal players in his Premier League Team of the Season so far, notably omitting Manchester City players, including the joint top scorer Erling Haaland.

The Newcastle legend and all-time Premier League top scorer made his selections after the season crossed the halfway mark.

The inclusion of two Arsenal players in Shearer’s team is a testament to the club’s strong showing in the league, until recent weeks at least.

About William Saliba, Shearer said the defender was, “Class personified. The ease with which he defends and his confidence on the ball at his age is amazing.”

Shearer explained his reasons for picking Declan Rice in his team, saying he, “Has transitioned seamlessly into the Arsenal midfield. His tackling and reading of the game is superb, while he’s also scored some crucial goals.”

Despite Haaland’s impressive tally of 14 goals and four assists in 15 games, Shearer did not include him nor any Manchester City players in his team.

Instead, he opted for an attacking formation featuring Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Tottenham’s Son Heung-min on the wings, along with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen as central strikers.

Haaland’s omission is particularly striking given his record of reaching the goal haul in five fewer games than Salah. Shearer, in praising Salah, acknowledged, “We are witnessing greatness. This season he’s scored his 150th Premier League goal, scored the joint-most goals along with Erling Haaland, and produced the joint-most assists.”

In addition to praising the performances of Salah, Son, and others, Shearer highlighted the impact of Jarrod Bowen, describing him as ‘devastating’ for West Ham.

He also praised Son as a ‘special talent’ and noted how Watkins had ‘spearheaded’ Aston Villa’s attack in their surprise title challenge.

Unai Emery was chosen as the manager of the team, following his lead in Aston Villa’s title challenge.
