Mohamed Salah will return to Liverpool this week to work on his injury rehabilitation, with AFCON ongoing and a club game against Arsenal coming up.
Mohamed Salah is away with Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations, but Liverpool’s star man has suffered a reported hamstring injury to keep them out of their next couple of games.
That’s if Egypt even make it out of the group stage. Salah is certainly out of their group decider against Cape Verde on Monday, and he’ll also miss their last-16 clash if they do qualify.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has now confirmed that the plan is for Salah to return to his club following Egypt’s final group game, so he can work on his injury with their medics.
“That’s the plan,” Klopp revealed. “If that’s already decided 100 per cent I don’t know, but that’s the plan.
“However long he is out, I think probably everybody sees that it makes sense that he is doing the rehab with us or with our people. That’s the plan, but if that’s now written in stone already, I don’t know.”
“I’m not a doctor,” Klopp responded, when asked whether Salah could play again for Egypt at the tournament.
“I would say if Egypt qualify for the final and he is fit before the final then probably yes. Why not?”
Based on Egypt’s initial timeline, Salah would be fit in time for the quarter-finals, which could be bad news for Arsenal.
If Egypt are eliminated, which is significantly more likely without their star forward, then Arsenal face Liverpool on the same weekend as the AFCON last-eight.
Arsenal’s fans will be hoping Mohamed Elneny can step up and help the team through to the next round in Salah’s absence, with the side only picking up two points from their opening two games.
Egypt need to beat group winners Cape Verde on Monday to guarantee progression to the last 16, though a draw may be enough depending on other results.
