Arthur Okonkwo will remain at Wrexham until the end of the season, with Arsenal’s deadline to recall him now having passed.

Young Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo went on loan to Wrexham over the summer, signing a one-year deal with the League Two club.

But the Gunners held a recall clause in the contract, and they could have brought the goalkeeper back to north London or loaned him elsewhere this month.

That clause expired at the weekend, which Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson was delighted about.

“The deadline for Arthur to be called back was January 21st and that has now passed so that is a massive signing for us to keep Arthur,” Parkinson said.

“He has been exceptional for us.”

“He has bought into everything the club is about, he has moved up here and he has been a great lad to have around,” Parkinson added.

“He is a terrific goalkeeper and when someone plays well, you always worry that he has caught the eye of other teams so I was very pleased when the clock struck 12!”

Okonkwo also seemed pleased to be sticking around, though he claims the situation was never up for debate.

“I had no doubts that I was going to be here until the end of the season,” Okonkwo said.

“Our assistant coach at Arsenal looks after the loan goalkeepers and he has been in constant communication.

“I am here to stay and it’s a really good feeling.”

Okonkwo has made 20 appearances for Wrexham in all competitions, keeping 10 clean sheets. He’s helped his side up to second in the League Two table, with a realistic shot at a consecutive promotion.

The Arsenal man has certainly done his reputation no harm this season, and he’ll hope that continues until the conclusion of the campaign.
