Despite still only being 24 years old, Morten Hjulmand has already spent several seasons at the highest level as a footballer.

Having graduated from Copenhagen schools, the Danish midfielder then moved to Austria to play for Admira Wacker, followed by stints at Lecce and now at Sporting.

In an interview with Sporting TV, Hjulmand recalled his early days in federated football and revealed little secrets of his journey, including his deep connection to Arsenal.

“I had an incredible childhood… It was always my choice and desire to play football. My brother is a very good footballer too,” Hjulmand said. He then discussed his move to Alvalade and the significance of adapting to new cultures and languages in each country he played in.

Hjulmand’s adoration of Arsenal began in his childhood. “When I started watching football, Arsenal had a fantastic team and Patrick Vieira was the captain and played in midfield. He was and is a great inspiration for me.

“My father had supported Arsenal for many years, and we started watching the games when we were younger. Thierry Henry was also an incredible player to watch.”

He currently sports an Arsenal tattoo.

Speaking about his future, Hjulmand is dedicated to showing his love for Sporting and their fans. His goals are firmly set on performing well at Sporting to cement his place in the Danish national team, “First of all, my goals are here at Sporting and to do well at the club… I hope to be part of the team’s eleven in the future and, of course, be at the European Championship,” he concluded.

At the time of writing, Hjulmand, who is valued at around €26m, has played three times for his country, and is under contract in Portugal until 2028 after his €18m move from Lecce during the summer.
