Spanish outlet Sport reported on Sunday that Mikel Arteta was considering terminating his Arsenal contract at the end of the season.

Sport claimed that Arteta had already communicated this intention to his entourage, linking the Arsenal boss with a move to Barcelona.

In light of Xavi’s announcement that he’ll leave the La Liga side at the end of the campaign, the report hinted Arteta could be the man to take over.

Though they stopped short of any suggestion that Barcelona had actually approached the Arsenal coach.

Arsenal insiders on Twitter quickly shot the news down, claiming Arteta is actually close to a new contract, and that the Sport report is just the pro-Barcelona press starting trouble.

Sky Sports then reported that Arteta is going nowhere, with no plans to leave Arsenal at the end of the season.

On Monday morning, the Evening Standard repeated that Arteta has no plans to walk away from Arsenal in 2024, remaining committed to the Gunners.

The report highlighted that Arteta has always played down links to Barcelona, and he’s determined to win trophies with his current club.

It looks like the Sport journalist was inspired by the departure announcements for Jurgen Klopp and Xavi to simply invent another announcement of his own.
