The Evening Standard report that Newcastle United could sell Callum Wilson for £18m in the final week of the January transfer window, with Arsenal among the clubs that have been alerted to his availability.

The Gunners aren’t the only club involved, with the Standard reporting that Chelsea and Manchester United have also been made aware of a potential deal.

The report suggests Arsenal could wait until the summer to sign a top-class striker, but Wilson could represent a short-term solution to the team’s goalscoring issues.

Newcastle are keen to raise money to stay within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, and Wilson hopes to remain in England ahead of Euro 2024 this summer.

Newcastle have had various other options to sell players this month, but they’ve rejected bids from Bayern Munich for Kieran Trippier, and Miguel Almiron is reluctant to follow up on interest in him from Saudi Arabia.

31-year-old Wilson might be their best bet at a sale before next week’s deadline, with various clubs in need of a striker.

Wilson has scored eight goals and assisted one in all competitions this season, across 1,076 minutes. That’s a goal contribution every 120 minutes, which is certainly not a bad record.

The main concern with the striker is his injury record. Wilson is currently in the middle of his third injury absence of the season, though he’s hoping to return to fitness next week.

Whether Arsenal are willing to take a risk and invest in Wilson’s signing remains to be seen. But you’d imagine they’d need to sell first, with talk that the Gunners are also close to the line with the Profit and Sustainability Rules.
