Real Madrid are reportedly in talks with Arsenal’s Swiss midfielder Lia Wälti for a potential move.

While a January transfer seems unlikely, a summer move is on the cards.

Real Madrid are reportedly in discussions with Arsenal‘s Swiss midfielder Lia Wälti, with a possible transfer on the horizon.

According to broadcaster ATA football, a switch could occur this month, but the summer is more likely due to Real’s reluctance to spend this window.

The short report mentions, “Wälti is keen to try something new.”

Lia Wälti, who has been with Arsenal since 2018, has been an integral part of the team, making 129 appearances and scoring two goals.

During her time at Arsenal, she has helped the team secure the FA WSL title in the 2018–19 season and the FA Women’s League Cup in the 2022–23 season.

Her individual accolades include being named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2018–19 and being awarded Swiss Female National Player in 2021.

It certainly seems that the likelihood of Wälti departing Arsenal in the January transfer window is slim, given Real Madrid’s recent transfer ‘moves’. Due to a lack of funds, they missed out on signing Natalie Björn from Everton, despite a long-standing interest, with Chelsea now set to sign the Swedish defender after meeting her transfer fee.

Looking ahead, Sylvain Jamet explains that “Arsenal’s midfield dynamic is set to evolve, especially considering the ages of their experienced midfielders – Kim Little (34) and Lia Wälti (31) next season”.

This situation brings the club’s succession planning into focus.

“Fortunately, Arsenal have already been preparing for the future with younger talents like Victoria Pelova (24), Kyra Conney-Cross (21), and Kathrine Kühl (20), all full internationals and highly skilled players crucial for the midfield area,” Jamet adds.

Should Wälti leave in the summer, Arsenal seem well-positioned to respond, either by acquiring another midfielder or promoting one of the many young talents at the club, including those currently gaining experience on loan.
