Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has refuted claims of Alexander Isak moving to Arsenal. Emphasising Isak’s crucial role at Newcastle, Howe likens his potential to that of club legend Alan Shearer, despite Arsenal’s longstanding interest.

Newcastle United’s manager Eddie Howe recently addressed the growing speculation linking their star striker Alexander Isak with a move to Arsenal.

Despite the revived rumours, Howe has firmly dismissed the notion of Isak leaving, likening the Swedish striker’s potential to that of Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.

Howe’s confidence in Isak, a £63 million signing for Newcastle, was evident as he spoke to Chronicle Live, who wrote, “When asked about the links with Arsenal, Howe responded by suggesting the Sweden star can become a legend on Tyneside.”

“The goal was very reminiscent of Alan, really, the finish that he delivered. He can go on, I think, to achieve incredible things in his career,” Howe said. He also acknowledged Isak’s recent injury struggles but was optimistic about his recovery and future contributions.

Isak’s importance to Newcastle was highlighted in their recent 3-2 defeat against Manchester City, where he demonstrated his value with a goal and several notable chances.

Meanwhile, Arsenal‘s interest in Isak seems to be a recurring theme. The North London club, now under the guidance of Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu, has reportedly been keen on the Swedish striker since his time at Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal’s interest in Isak dates back to 2016 when he was at AIK Solna.

However, the possibility of a move to Arsenal has always seemed remote. In the summer of 2022, Arsenal considered signing Isak to pair him with his former Real Sociedad teammate Martin Odegaard, but were deterred by his high release clause, leading to his move to Newcastle.

Despite the reported ongoing interest, any potential move by Arsenal would be more likely in the summer, especially considering the financial constraints imposed by Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Newcastle‘s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has admitted that the club will have to make some player sales, but Isak, under contract until 2028 and one of Newcastle‘s highest earners, appears to be a crucial part of Howe’s plans.

In response to the defeat against Manchester City and speculation around player futures, Howe emphasised the spirit within his squad. “They’re representing an incredible football club and an incredible city. I’ve never had the feeling that they’ve not [fought for the club]. They’re a really honest group of players who want to deliver good things for the football club,” Howe said.
