Remember Shkodran Mustafi, the German World Cup winner who spent five years at Arsenal? The man synonymous with both towering headers and, well, defensive mishaps?

Believe it or not, he’s still out there, a free agent six months after leaving his last club, Spanish Segunda outfit Levante.

Shkodran Mustafi, still just 31, racked up over 150 appearances for the Gunners, lifting two FA Cups along the way. However, his Emirates tenure was a rollercoaster of moments of brilliance and, let’s be honest, head-scratching errors. In 2021, both parties agreed to call it quits, and Mustafi embarked on a Spanish adventure with Levante, via a disastrous short spell with Schalke.

His time in La Liga’s second tier was far from a fairytale return to form, particularly when you consider Levante were in La Liga when Mustafi arrived. When promotion dreams slipped through Levante‘s fingers in the playoffs last season, his contract wasn’t renewed.

And so, here we are, six months later, with Mustafi still searching for a new home.

He’s still on the lookout for a new club with no thoughts of calling it a day. Mustafi’s been busy – “intensive discussions with those responsible at some clubs,” he told Sport recently. The anticipation, he admits, is “great.” The itch to be back on the pitch, “tingling.”

Germany or abroad? The world is his oyster, says Mustafi. Five languages in his arsenal (pun intended!), a World Cup medal tucked away, and an adaptability honed by international experience – he’s ready for anything. Roma in Serie A? Just one of the clubs rumoured to be circling.

In six months, however, none have saw fit to land.
