Jonas Eidevall’s milestone 100th game in charge wasn’t going to be marred by another defeat against Liverpool.

After a frustrating first half, Vivianne Miedema’s thunderous strike and Caitlin Foord’s clinical finish secured a crucial 2-0 victory for Arsenal, keeping the Gunners hot on the heels of Manchester City and Chelsea at the top of the table.

From the off, Arsenal’s intentions were clear. Katie McCabe and Caitlin Foord tore down the left flank, peppering the Liverpool box with dangerous crosses. Victoria Pelova‘s mazy run almost resulted in an Alessia Russo goal, but the woodwork stood firm.

But for all their dominance, the first half remained frustratingly goalless. Liverpool’s resolute low block frustrated Arsenal’s forwards, and set-pieces, despite being expertly delivered by Beth Mead, couldn’t quite yield the breakthrough.

In the second half, Emily Fox in a whirlwind of pace and trickery, skipped through the Liverpool defence. With a perfect pass, she found Miedema, unmarked at the edge of the box. And as she has done so often, the Dutch maestro unleashed a rocket from distance that left Laws helpless, with a slight deflection to help.

The second half saw the floodgates threaten to open. Russo’s blistering run down the right was met by Fox’s perfectly weighted cross, and Caitlin Foord gleefully tucked it away to double Arsenal’s lead.

Super-sub Stina Blackstenius provided late impetus, peppering the Liverpool defence with shots, but the scoreline remained unchanged, although Blackstenius will be wondering how.

Eidevall’s 100th game couldn’t have been scripted much better. A hard-fought victory against a stubborn opponent, showcasing the resilience and quality that defines this Arsenal team.

With Manchester City just ahead on goal difference, and Chelsea now within three points, the Gunners march on, ready to face West Ham in their next challenge.
