Former Arsenal defender Matthew Upson has described Arsenal’s recent performance as ‘flat’ following their 2-1 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage, a result that has dealt a significant blow to their Premier League campaign.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Upson highlighted the team’s lack of dynamism, contrasting their recent form with previous displays of attacking prowess.

Arsenal, who seized an early lead through Bukayo Saka, struggled to sustain their initial momentum, leading to a performance that was both underwhelming and alarming.

The team showed a noticeable absence of urgency and creativity, resulting in ineffective attacks. In contrast, Fulham capitalised on their chances, scoring twice and demonstrating a more potent attack, particularly in the final third.

This defeat not only prevented Arsenal from climbing to the top of the Premier League table but also marked the end of their impressive record of not losing top-flight matches after scoring first.

This was their first loss since January 2022 in such circumstances, placing them in a precarious position, just a point ahead of rivals Tottenham.

As Arsenal prepare for their upcoming FA Cup match against Liverpool, they face the challenge of addressing these performance issues to rediscover their form.

Upson’s comments underscore the urgency of this task, as he observed, “When it’s all going right for Arsenal, the ball is firing. They carve teams open.

“That hasn’t been the case of late and they’ve looked a little bit suspect at the back as well. Arsenal looked flat and tired, that would be the major concern for me.”
