Arsenal have taken a proactive step in their pursuit of Ousmane Diomande by holding a meeting with the player’s family.

The 20-year-old Sporting Lisbon defender, who has impressed this season with two goals and one assist from 22 matches, is at the centre of a transfer tussle involving major Premier League clubs.

Arsenal’s interest in Diomande is part of Mikel Arteta‘s strategy to strengthen the team’s defence. Despite the club’s desire to secure Diomande, they might postpone the transfer until summer due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) constraints.

Newcastle United are also in the race to sign Diomande, reportedly accelerating their efforts to add the player during the winter transfer window.

Adding to the intrigue, Arsenal plans to send scouts to the Africa Cup of Nations to watch Diomande play after it was reported the club held a meeting with the player’s family.

Sporting Lisbon have set a high bar for any potential transfer, insisting on the €80 million release clause in Diomande’s contract.

This valuation could pose a challenge for Arsenal, who have already made significant investments under Arteta’s tenure and have other squad areas to consider.

Diomande’s current contract, valued at about €40 million, runs until 2027, further complicating the potential transfer.

Arsenal’s scouting of Diomande, along with teammate Viktor Gyökeres, is a clear indication of their long-term planning and commitment to strengthening the team. The situation remains fluid, with financial considerations playing a crucial role in any potential deal.
