The Daily Mail are reporting in their Tuesday edition that Arsenal have opened talks with Takehiro Tomiyasu over a new contract.

Tomiyasu signed for Arsenal for €18.6m in 2021 and his current deal expires in 2025. It is believed that he earns around £56k-per-week on this contract.

Any new deal would, of course, see a hefty increase in that basic salary.

The 25-year-old Japanese defender has made 73 appearances for Arsenal, scoring one and assisting six.

Tomiyasu returned from a calf problem against Fulham at the weekend in what was a major boost for the squad, if only a temporary one.

Tomiyasu will head off for the 18th AFC Asian Cup in Qatar shortly, with the tournament kicking off on 12 January and running until 10 February.

Tomiyasu will face off against Indonesia, Iraq and Vietnam in the group stages.

Japan have not won the Asian Cup since 2011 after victories in the 1992, 2000, and 2004 editions.

Held every four years, the current champions are Qatar.
