Ange Postecoglou went on a rant about VAR decisions on Thursday night, after previous praise from the media for not doing so.

If you cast your mind back to early November, you’ll recall a couple of Premier League fixtures where VAR played a prominent role in the final result.

Arsenal’s match against Newcastle United hinged on a couple of VAR calls, most notably Bruno Guimaraes’ unpunished elbow on Jorginho, as well as three potential infringements in the build-up to Newcastle’s goal.

After the match, Mikel Arteta was clearly furious, and his angry comments led to a baseless FA charge which was later dismissed by an independent commission.

Just days later, Tottenham Hotspur had a penalty awarded against them and a red card shown to Cristian Romero after a VAR review.

At the time, Ange Postecoglou was magnanimous, saying: “Premier League managers should just manage their football clubs.

“I’ve never have and I never will talk to a referee about the rules of the game. I was taught that you grow up and you respect the officials.

“I think it is so hard for referees to officiate these days. Their authority is just constantly getting diminished.”

But many pointed out at the time that it was much easier for Postecoglou to accept decisions that were clearly correct, particularly when his players had been lucky not be sent off earlier.

The question remained about how Postecoglou would react when he didn’t agree with a decision, and we got our answer on Thursday night, as he went on a rant about a couple of calls against his side.

“It was obviously clear and obvious, because it only took him three minutes to see it on the screen,” Postecoglou said sarcastically.

“VAR picked up everything today except for the one tackle that might have cost me another player.”

It’s all very ironic, after the media sang Postecoglou’s praises for ‘showing how to handle VAR issues with dignity’ in November.

At the end of the day, the Spurs boss is no different to the rest. He just fooled a few journalists into thinking he was.
