Despite being optimistic he would be fit for the weekend, Alexis Mac Allister has now been ruled out until January.

This news comes following a deep knee cut that required stitches after a challenge in the Sheffield United match.

Assistant manager Pep Ljinders commented on Mac Allister’s condition, stating, “Alexis is progressing well, he doesn’t have pain anymore, which is a good thing. It was worse than we first thought, but he is progressing well, no pain. Let’s see if we can progress him.”

Jurgen Klopp had previously admitted that Mac Allister’s injury was “a bit more tricky than we thought.”

The team faces further challenges as young Scottish player Ben Doak has sustained a torn lateral meniscus, necessitating surgery. This injury occurred during an Under-21 game against Chelsea, posing another blow to the squad.

However, there are positive updates regarding Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota. Gravenberch, who had to leave the pitch in the recent match against Manchester United, has fortunately not suffered a hamstring injury as feared.

Ljinders said: “We thought there was really something, he came off during the game and you saw immediately when he came off what that did to the team as well, he was playing really well. But he had a scan and it’s only DOMS, which is fatigue, so that’s a really good thing. He will train hopefully today, let’s see where he is. We have to be careful of course because that’s a sign. So that’s a good one.”

Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson, who recently returned to fitness, played in the team’s match against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

On the other hand, forward Diogo Jota is still targeting a return post-Christmas, ruling him out of the game at the weekend. Other players like Thiago Alcantara and Andy Robertson are also working towards a comeback in the new year, with Robertson potentially being fit for the FA Cup clash.
