Kai Havertz is no longer expected to play at left-back for Germany, according to head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Kai Havertz made some headlines over the November international break, with head coach Julian Nagelsmann choosing to use the Arsenal summer signing on the left side of his defence.

Havertz started Germany’s first match of the break against Turkey at left-back, and he then played more of a wing-back role away to Austria.

But it seems that experiment is at an end, with the coach confirming as much in a recent interview.

“Yes, it’s over,” Nagelsmann said (via Fabrizio Romano). “It won’t happen anymore, although it wasn’t a failure. He played two very good games.”

You can understand both sides of what Nagelsmann is saying, and why he might choose to put an end to the new tactic despite Havertz playing well.

The player did do well on an individual basis, scoring against Turkey and proving to be one of Germany’s better performers against Austria.

But Germany performed poorly, losing both matches and conceding five goals between the two games.

Even if the new system worked for Havertz, it clearly wasn’t enough to turn the team’s recent poor form around.

With Euro 2024 now just months away, Nagelsmann doesn’t really have any time for further experimentation.

Germany have lost six of their last 10 games, drawing a further two, and they need to get back to basics and figure out a winning strategy before the tournament that they’re hosting kicks off.

Havertz has 14 goals and 14 assists in 42 games for Germany, and it’s likely their best bet is playing him in more of an attacking role.
