Arsenal are closely following developments with Miguel Gutierrez, who is expected to be the centre of a transfer saga in January.

Relevo report that Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez is set to be one of the big names in the January transfer market, with Real Madrid among those with a vested interest.

Real Madrid sold Gutierrez to Girona in the first place, but they have the option to buy him back for just €8m (£6.87m) next summer.

For other clubs, Gutierrez has a release clause of €35m (£30.1m). Girona would probably accept less, to avoid losing him to Real Madrid for just €8m, but Madrid would still have the right of first refusal in that case.

According to the report, Arsenal are following closely, positioning themselves for a January move for the player.

Fabrizio Romano also recently claimed Arsenal had sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old this season, years after they first decided to monitor the left-back.

Back in the summer of 2021, The Athletic reported that Gutierrez was one player Arsenal were tracking.

At the time, the player had a €40m release clause and was highly rated, but congestion in his position at Real Madrid always made it likely he’d move on.

That’s exactly what happened, but Arsenal looked elsewhere for signings at left-back, bringing in Nuno Tavares that summer before signing Oleksandr Zinchenko the next year.

A year after the links to Arsenal, following a quiet season with Real Madrid, Gutierrez moved on to Girona. Real retain 50% of his rights and a sell-on clause, and he has a contract until 2027.

The situation has changed for Arsenal over the last year or so, with Tavares joining Nottingham Forest on loan with an option to buy, and Kieran Tierney moving on loan to Real Sociedad.

The Gunners are perhaps back in need of a left-back again, with Takehiro Tomiyasu filling in expertly but persistent injury problems making the Japanese international an unreliable option.
