Speaking in his press conference ahead of Arsenal’s match against West Ham United in midweek, Mikel Arteta confirmed that the club have transfer targets in mind for the January transfer window.

We’re now less than a week away from the winter window opening, and Arteta says the club have been putting plans in place.

“We have certain targets and ideas if things happen,” Arteta said. “We don’t know how the squad is going to be and you have to be prepared for that.

“It’s a very tricky market that shifts very quickly and it’s quite unpredictable as well. We will be prepared and try to make the right calls.”

Arsenal made some excellent signings in the summer, with Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and David Raya all becoming starters over the last few months, whilst Jurrien Timber would almost certainly be part of the side as well if not for injury.

Arteta says the club will be open to making further moves in the January market if the right opportunities arise.

“If there is something that we can improve the squad and needs something that we can’t fulfil with players here, then we are always going to be open to doing that because we want to be stronger,” Arteta added.

In addition to their strong summer business, Arsenal also did some good deals last January, signing Jakub Kiwior, Leandro Trossard, and Jorginho.

Those deals will give the club confidence that their recruitment process is working well. But the other side of the coin is that they’ve spent a lot of money in the last 12 months.

The return to the Champions League, along with the progression to the knockout stages of the competition, will certainly have helped on the financial side.

All the same, Arsenal are likely to need one or two significant sales if they want to make any major January purchases.
