Despite Arsenal not receiving any warnings for time-wasting, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has been moaning about it, while saying he’d also do the same.
If we had any questions about whether or not Gary O’Neil pays attention to the narratives in the press, then we got our answer on Saturday when he moaned about Arsenal’s alleged time-wasting.
While other teams are praised for their ‘game management’, the UK’s media have gone out of their way to accuse Arsenal of time-wasting in the same circumstances.
After his side’s defeat on Saturday, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil expressed frustration at Arsenal‘s tactics in the closing stages of encounter.
O’Neil accused Arsenal of time-wasting after Wolves narrowed the gap with a late goal from Matheus Cunha in the 86th minute. Despite six minutes of added time, O’Neil felt more should have been given (it was), citing delays caused by Arsenal.
Clearly needing a new watch, O’Neil seems to have ignored the two-and-a-half minutes extra that were added onto the initial six.
“There was a lengthy stoppage in there and they told us we’d go to 98 minutes [it went to 98.5] but then Arsenal took 45 seconds [an average time for most sides] over at least three free-kicks they had,” O’Neil said.
“So, it just felt they [the officials] could have managed the time better for us and we could have got all the allotted time.”
He added, “I think the ball was out of play for so much of that sort of last six minutes that we got. I felt some should have been added on time.”
O’Neil, while pointing out Arsenal’s game management, also acknowledged that he would have advised his team to adopt similar tactics if in a comparable situation.
“Sometimes you don’t expect Arsenal to be time-wasting but I am sure if we had taken as long over some of the throws and restarts away at the Emirates we would have been receiving yellow cards.
“No criticism of Arsenal, if it was me I would’ve had my team taking their time at that moment as well,” he stated.
